“What Led to Oasis’ Split? A Look at the Gallagher Brothers’ Longstanding Rift — and the Unexpected Catalyst for Their 2025 Reunion Tour”

By Website Content Manager

“Though the English rock band soared to fame with iconic performances, behind-the-scenes friction was brewing.”

Oasis: The Rise, the Rift, and the Long-Awaited Reunion

Oasis remains one of the most iconic and commercially successful bands to come out of the U.K., but their legacy has always been marked by more than just their music. Behind the scenes, sibling rivalry and internal tensions shaped their story — culminating in a dramatic breakup and, eventually, an unexpected reunion.

After selling over 70 million albums globally and securing multiple entries in the Guinness World Records, the band famously imploded due to long-standing friction between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher.

For years, the frontman and lead guitarist engaged in a public war of words. However, in August 2024, fans were stunned when the pair announced they were reuniting for a new tour, putting an end to their feud — at least for now.

In a dramatic statement shared with PEOPLE, the band declared:
“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”

Liam expressed his excitement on social media but added that the pair wouldn’t be doing any joint interviews, writing on X (formerly Twitter):
“We don’t want to do interviews coz we’re scared of the media asking us intrusive questions and trying to pick holes in our relationship.”

So what exactly caused the band’s notorious split — and how did they manage to reunite after all these years?

The Origins of Oasis

Oasis was born in Manchester, England. The band’s earliest lineup came together in 1991 when Liam Gallagher joined Rain, a local group featuring Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs, Paul “Guigsy” McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll. After rebranding as Oasis, Liam’s older brother Noel joined shortly after as lead guitarist and primary songwriter.

As the band rose to fame in the ’90s, lineup changes followed. By 1999, McCarroll, Arthurs, and McGuigan had exited — with the latter two reportedly stepping away to focus on family. Their spots were filled by Alan White (drums), Gem Archer (guitar), and Andy Bell (bass). Eventually, Chris Sharrock took over on drums.

The 2009 Breakup

The group officially disbanded on August 28, 2009, after a heated argument between Liam and Noel just before their scheduled set at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. The altercation led to the cancellation of the show, and Noel’s departure from the band followed immediately.

In a now-deleted message from the Oasis website, Noel announced:
“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight… I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

Although Noel once joked that the feud dated back to a childhood squabble over a stolen teddy bear, he later cited deeper issues — including disagreements over Liam’s clothing brand, which the singer reportedly wanted to promote during tours.

“I didn’t think it was right for him to be selling his fashion line to our fans,” Noel told The Hollywood Reporter in 2011.

In a 2015 interview with Esquire UK, he elaborated further:
“We had two gigs left… If I’d finished that tour and taken six months off, I might’ve gotten over it. But that fight in Paris was the final straw.”

Liam also took accountability in a 2011 interview with The Guardian, saying:
“Me and my brother were to blame for Oasis breaking up — not just me, not just him. And it definitely wasn’t the other band members.”

A New Chapter in 2025

While many thought a reunion was impossible, the brothers surprised fans by announcing they would share the stage again in 2025. The announcement has reignited excitement among longtime fans who have waited over a decade to see Oasis together again.

Though their relationship has been anything but simple, it seems the Gallaghers have found enough common ground — at least for now — to bring Oasis back to life.
