The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson admitted that he intentionally demanded a larger payment during negotiations, a move that ultimately contributed to the band’s 2015 split. Reflecting on the situation, Robinson revealed that his actions were driven by anger and resentment, saying he made the demand “out of spite” because he was deeply upset at the time.

During an appearance on Jay Mohr’s podcast, the rock musician explained that he felt emotionally devastated by the path the band was taking. Despite the tension that led to their breakup, the members later reunited and have continued creating and releasing new music together.
The Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson recently reflected on the group’s 2015 breakup, admitting that his frustration with the music industry influenced the harsh choices that contributed to the split.
Speaking on Jay Mohr’s Mohr Stories podcast on May 19, Robinson shared that he had been emotionally drained and disillusioned with the state of the band he started alongside his brother, Rich Robinson, in 1984. According to him, he believed the only way to reconnect with music on his own terms was to destroy any possibility of continuing under the same circumstances.
Robinson explained that during discussions about the band’s future, he deliberately made financial demands he knew would create conflict. He recalled asking for a larger share of the profits because he recognized it would likely end the partnership for good.
When the band officially separated in 2015, Rich Robinson publicly blamed his brother for the breakup, alleging that Chris wanted him to surrender his equal ownership stake in the group while longtime drummer Steve Gorman would lose his share entirely and become a salaried employee instead.
Looking back, Chris Robinson admitted he had grown unhappy with what he felt the band had become. In his view, the focus shifted away from artistic passion and toward maintaining financial success and lifestyles. Although he acknowledged his perspective could sound self-centered, he insisted he was unwilling to let the business side of the industry crush his creativity or identity as an artist. He also confessed that some of his actions were intentionally hurtful because he felt emotionally wounded himself.
Following the breakup, Robinson continued performing with the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, while Rich Robinson pursued solo projects. The brothers reportedly stopped communicating for several years before eventually reconciling and reuniting for the Shake Your Money Maker 30th anniversary tour in 2020.
By 2022, The Black Crowes had begun releasing new music again, including their latest album, A Pound of Feathers, which debuted in March. Robinson also credited his wife, Camille Robinson, whom he married in 2020, for helping him through the difficult period and supporting his eventual reconciliation with his brother.
