Sully Erna Says New Godsmack Music Is Coming With Current Lineup
By Jett Morales

Godsmack is not done making new music. That is the key takeaway from Sully Erna’s latest update, and it clears up a pretty big question hanging around the band.
According to Blabbermouth, Erna confirmed in a new interview that Godsmack plans to work on music as a follow-up to the band’s 2023 album “Lighting Up The Sky.”
That matters because “Lighting Up The Sky” had been framed as a kind of endpoint. Erna is now making the distinction sharper: it was intended to be the last new music from Godsmack’s original lineup, not the last new Godsmack music overall.
Big difference. Same name on the marquee. Different chapter.
Erna Wants To Hear Where This Version Of Godsmack Goes
Erna sounds less like a guy closing the garage door and more like someone staring at a fresh set of tools.
“I wanna do a record with these [new] guys, 'cause I'm curious to see where it goes,” Erna said, according to Blabbermouth.
That is a pretty straight answer. No fog machine. No “never say never” dodge. He wants to make a record with the current band, and he wants to find out what that chemistry does in the studio.
Blabbermouth identifies Godsmack’s current lineup as:
- Sully Erna on vocals and guitar
- Robbie Merrill on bass
- Sam Koltun on guitar
- Mike Mangini on drums
That lineup note is the whole point here. This is not just “more Godsmack” in the abstract. Erna is specifically talking about new music made with the band as it exists now.
The Timeline Points To 2027
Erna also put a rough window on it.
“I’m very curious myself where it’ll go, but it’s gonna happen, and it’s gonna happen at some point next year,” he said, according to Blabbermouth.
Since Blabbermouth published the story on October 21, 2026, that puts the planned activity in 2027.
For fans, the news changes the read on “Lighting Up The Sky.” Instead of treating that album like a locked final page, it now looks more like the end of one version of Godsmack and the setup for another.
That can be tricky territory for any long-running rock band. Fans get attached to eras. Bands either keep repeating themselves until the spark dies, or they take the risk of letting a new lineup push the sound somewhere else. Erna is openly saying he is curious about that second path.
No song titles. No album title. No release date. Just the important part: Godsmack plans to make new music, and Erna says it is happening with the current crew.
For Overdrive 100.5 listeners, that means the Godsmack story is not in the rearview. The next riff is already on the calendar.
