Ringo Starr Laughs About Recording Another Song with Paul McCartney: “We’ve Known Each Other Forever”

“It’s the first time Paul and I have recorded a song as equal vocal partners—we’re both singing on it,” the Beatles legend tells PEOPLE about their collaboration, “Home to Us.”

Ringo Starr has shared why his latest collaboration with fellow Beatles legend Paul McCartney holds a special place in his heart.

During his Peace and Love 86th birthday celebration in Beverly Hills, California, on July 7, Starr spoke about recording the 2026 duet “Home to Us,” which appears on McCartney’s newest album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Starr explained that the song marks a unique milestone in their decades-long musical partnership because it is the first time they have performed together as equal vocal partners. While they have contributed to each other’s recordings over the years—with Starr singing harmonies on some of McCartney’s songs and McCartney adding bass to Starr’s projects—this track features both artists sharing the lead vocals.

Joking about their long history together, Starr remarked that working side by side felt completely natural because they have known each other for so many years.

The former Beatles drummer also praised McCartney, describing him as an exceptional musician whose bass playing and songwriting continue to impress him. Starr said reuniting with his longtime bandmate was especially meaningful because they were part of what he considers the greatest band of all time, adding that McCartney remains a wonderful friend and collaborator.

Released on May 8, “Home to Us” serves as the second single from McCartney’s 20th solo studio album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, which arrived on May 29.

The two musicians have continued to collaborate long after the Beatles disbanded. Starr contributed drums to McCartney’s Flaming Pie in 1997, McCartney played bass on Starr’s Give More Love in 2017, and later performed every instrument on Starr’s Rewind Forward in 2023, among several other joint projects.

Earlier this year, Starr returned to his love of country music with the release of Long Long Road in April. In a previous interview with PEOPLE, he reflected on recording the genre decades earlier with Beaucoups of Blues, explaining that the opportunity came shortly after the Beatles split while he was working with George Harrison in the studio.
