The duo took turns singing verses and danced side by side during their rendition of the 1983 hit “Burning Down the House.”
Olivia Rodrigo really knows how to bring down the house — or should we say, “Byrne” it down!
On Saturday, June 7, the 22-year-old “Vampire” singer surprised fans at Governors Ball 2025 in New York’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park by inviting David Byrne onstage during her headline set. Together, they performed the Talking Heads’ iconic 1983 track “Burning Down the House.”
“I’m so honored to share the stage tonight with a very special guest,” Rodrigo told the crowd near the end of her performance. “Please give it up for the legendary David Byrne!”
Byrne, 73, soon appeared on the dimly lit stage, sporting a white T-shirt and red overalls that perfectly complemented Rodrigo’s sparkling red two-piece outfit. He picked up an acoustic guitar and kicked off the classic tune.
Throughout the song, the two swapped vocals and engaged in playful, quirky dances—flailing their arms and jogging in place. The performance ended with a warm hug as Rodrigo accompanied the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer off the stage.
Rodrigo then closed her set with “Deja Vu” before returning for an encore featuring “Brutal,” “Good 4 U,” “All-American B—-,” and “Get Him Back.”
Her performance capped off a challenging day marked by delays, rain, and long lines after the festival’s start was postponed to 4:30 p.m. local time. Despite the schedule changes and her later set time around 9:30 p.m., Rodrigo ensured fans were treated to a memorable surprise.
Saturday’s headline set followed Tyler, the Creator’s performance at GovBallNYC the day before, with Hozier scheduled to close the festival on Sunday in Queens.
Rodrigo frequently surprises audiences with special guests during festival appearances and arena tours. The Grammy winner has previously brought out artists like Tyler Childers, Noah Kahan, and Lily Allen on her Guts World Tour.
Other surprise moments include Rodrigo joining No Doubt at Coachella 2024, performing “Bathwater” alongside Gwen Stefani and the band while sporting an “I [heart] ND” tank top.
