“Megadeth Reveals Final Album and Farewell Tour, Confirms Retirement: ‘The Toughest Part Is Saying Goodbye’”

By Website Content Manager

“Dave Mustaine urged fans to share in the moment, saying, ‘Don’t be upset—be glad for us. Join me in celebrating over the next few years.’”

Megadeth Announces Retirement, Final Album, and Farewell Tour

The end of an era has arrived for Megadeth.

More than four decades after Dave Mustaine founded the iconic metal band in 1983 with James LoMenzo, Dirk Verbeuren, and Teemu Mäntysaari, the group has revealed that they are officially retiring. The announcement, made Thursday, Aug. 14, on their official website, came directly from frontman Mustaine.

“Many artists reach the end of their careers, sometimes by choice, sometimes not,” Mustaine wrote. “What makes me grateful is that I get to finish on my own terms, still at the top. I’ve toured the world, connected with millions of fans, and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye.”

Before stepping away, the band has one more project to share. Their seventeenth studio album, confirmed as their last, is set to arrive early next year. “If there was ever a right time for a new album, it’s now,” Mustaine continued. “If there was ever a right time to tour the world, it’s now. This is our final record, and we can’t wait for you to hear it and join us on our farewell tour.”

He encouraged fans to approach the announcement with joy rather than sadness: “We’ve made so many friends along the way, and I hope to see all of you on this global tour. Don’t be mad, don’t be sad—celebrate with us over the next few years.”

Mustaine reflected proudly on the band’s legacy, crediting Megadeth with helping shape the sound of modern metal: “Together we started something extraordinary. We built a new musical style, we sparked a revolution, and we changed the guitar world. That influence will last long beyond us. I’m grateful to all of you. Thank you for everything.”

In addition to the new record, Mustaine is preparing to release a memoir. Meanwhile, Megadeth will play European shows this September and October as part of their farewell run.

To mark the announcement, the band unveiled an animated video featuring their mascot, Vic Rattlehead. “For over four decades I’ve been chained in silence,” the character declared. “But the end demands my voice. The next Megadeth album will be the last. Forty years of metal forged in steel, ending in fire. When the new year begins, the global farewell tour begins. Stay loud, stay ready, and meet me on the front lines.”

Over their career, Megadeth earned eight top-10 albums on the Billboard 200 and landed a Hot 100 hit in 1992 with “Symphony of Destruction,” which peaked at No. 71.
