“James Hetfield Opens Up About Personal Evolution as Metallica Debuts New Documentary”

The iconic metal band appeared at the Tribeca Film Festival for the debut of Metallica Saved My Life.

Metallica Reflects on Personal Growth and Global Impact at Metallica Saved My Life Documentary Premiere

At this week’s Tribeca Festival in New York City, Metallica Saved My Life premiered, offering a heartfelt look at how the band’s music has deeply resonated with fans across the globe—particularly during periods of personal hardship. The documentary features emotional stories from listeners in places as far-reaching as Japan and Botswana, illustrating the transformative and often life-saving power of Metallica’s sound.

The film’s message hits home for the band members themselves, especially frontman James Hetfield, who has previously spoken openly about his insecurities and his time in rehab in 2019. During a post-screening Q&A on June 11 at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Hetfield shared how performing gives him a sense of ease and authenticity he often struggles to find in everyday life.

“Being on stage feels more natural to me than being off of it,” Hetfield, 61, explained to The New Yorker’s Amanda Petrusich. “I feel like I can be myself with our fans—and the more honest I am, the more they seem to embrace it. That’s the opposite of what I grew up with, where being your true self wasn’t always accepted.”

He continued, noting how decades of shared experience with his bandmates—Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo—have only strengthened their bond. “We’ve been through so much together,” he said. “Even into our fourth decade, it keeps getting better.”

Hetfield also reflected on how recovery changed his perspective on music and life. “I’ve learned a lot—about myself, about others, about how to live with more balance. I try not to take everything so seriously anymore. Being on stage and being yourself—what a gift. Honestly, I’ve got the best job in the world.”

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Metallica Saved My Life goes beyond the band’s legacy, shining a light on the passionate fanbase that has grown alongside them. It captures how Metallica’s music has helped people form identity, build community, and find strength during difficult times.

Ulrich, 61, emphasized the importance of showcasing the diversity and depth of their fans’ stories. “This film has been in the works for a while,” he told PEOPLE at the premiere. “The fanbase is so varied—so many unique lives and experiences. We wanted to celebrate them, give them the spotlight, and say: ‘They’re just as much a part of Metallica as we are.’”

Bassist Robert Trujillo, 60, added how emotionally impactful the stories were for the band. “There are so many moments that struck a chord with me,” he said. “Hearing how we’ve connected with people in corners of the world we’d never expect—that’s powerful. Our fans are just as essential as the music. We’re all connected, and that connection is incredibly meaningful to us.”
