“Foo Fighters Introduce New Drummer Ilan Rubin During a Small Club Gig on Saturday Night”

Foo Fighters made their long-awaited live return this weekend, performing their first show in more than a year.

Frontman Dave Grohl and the band took the stage at the 900-capacity Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California, on Saturday night (Sept. 13). The 25-track set also marked the live debut of drummer Ilan Rubin, who stepped in earlier this year to replace Josh Freese. Freese had previously taken over the role following the death of Taylor Hawkins in 2021.

The career-spanning performance pulled material from nearly every Foo Fighters album, with the sole exception of Sonic Highways (2015). While no brand-new songs were included, fans were treated to a surprise snippet of Motörhead’s Ace of Spades during No Son of Mine.

After the gig, the band updated their Facebook profile photo to a shot featuring producer Rick Rubin. A recent teaser post showing only the group’s legs carried the caption “Foo Fighters Assemble!”, hinting that new music—potentially a follow-up to 2023’s But Here We Are—may be in the works.
