“Fall Out Boy Reacts After Glen Powell Shares Comical Teen-Made ‘Sugar, We’re Goin Down’ Music Video on SNL”

“The band playfully suggested that Powell could direct their next music video.”

Did Glen Powell’s teenage music video earn him a new opportunity?

On November 15, Glen Powell made his Saturday Night Live hosting debut, and during his opening monologue, he shared a humorous story about creating a teen-made music video for Fall Out Boy’s 2005 hit “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.”

“When I was a teenager, I directed some of my own films,” Powell, 37, joked. “They were a bit experimental, emotionally nuanced. I was really into French new wave at the time—you might notice the influence.”

Of course, the homemade videos were far from cinematic masterpieces: they show Powell as a teen running and jumping in the street while lip-syncing the song, sporting a yacht captain’s hat. Still, the band gave the actor their playful approval.

Fall Out Boy—Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Joe Trohman, and Andy Hurley—tweeted: “Want to direct the next fob music video @glenpowell?”

“Sugar, We’re Goin Down,” the lead single from Fall Out Boy’s second album From Under the Cork Tree, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its official music video, unlike Powell’s DIY version, follows a man with deer antlers falling in love despite his girlfriend’s father’s objections.

Powell also recounted a touching story about flying his UPS driver, Mitch, to New York to watch the SNL episode. Four years earlier, Powell had told Mitch he would host the show for Top Gun: Maverick, but the episode was delayed due to COVID.

“I was on the porch with my family when I got the call about hosting,” Powell recalled. “Mitch showed up with a delivery and was like, ‘What’s going on?’ I told him, ‘I’m hosting SNL.’ He thought I was joking for the next four years, so I had to track him down to prove I wasn’t crazy. But he came, and he’s in the audience tonight.”

Powell has described hosting SNL as a lifelong dream. He previously told PEOPLE: “It’s incredible when a childhood dream comes true. I’ve been waiting for this stage for as long as I can remember.”
