Daryl Hall believes the secret to lasting success across generations lies in one simple principle: “You have to keep reinventing yourself.”

Hall is currently touring across North America in 2025, performing in support of his 2024 solo album, D.

With decades of experience behind him, Daryl Hall has a clear understanding of what it takes to stay at the top of one’s craft — and his philosophy centers on one key idea: constant reinvention.

Now 79, the Hall & Oates cofounder has built an extraordinary career decorated with five Grammy nominations, 24 BMI Pop Awards, 14 BMI Million-Air Awards, and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Reflecting on his creative longevity, Hall tells PEOPLE that the secret is to “reinvent yourself constantly.”

“You have to refresh yourself, find new ways to stay inspired, and approach creativity from countless directions,” he says. Hall believes that paying attention to “all those things” — and turning them into part of your “arsenal of creative energy” — is essential to artistic growth.

He adds that longevity in the music industry also requires strength, courage, and an independent mindset. “You have to be strong, brave, and not let other people’s opinions steer you,” he explains. “It takes a certain toughness. You need to stay focused, understand the long game, and not let distractions pull you off course.”

Despite his legendary status, Hall admits that he doesn’t dwell much on the idea of legacy. “Honestly, it doesn’t mean a whole lot,” he says. “Once you’re gone, you’re gone — John Lennon said that, and I agree with him.”

Instead, Hall hopes to be remembered for the energy and spirit behind his music. “I just want people to know I carried a certain kind of vibration — a point of view, an attitude,” he says. “If fans walk away thinking, ‘That guy wrote good songs,’ that’s all I could ever ask for.”

That grounded perspective also extends to his view on health and well-being. “It’s the old cliché, but health really is everything,” Hall notes. “When you feel good and take care of yourself, you’re capable of doing so much more. If not, everything else becomes harder.”

Hall’s ability to stay creative and relevant shines through on his 2024 solo album, D, which he’s currently taking on tour across North America. Joining him on the road is longtime friend and collaborator Glenn Tilbrook, whom Hall calls a “creative powerhouse.”
