The Grammy-winning artist and songwriter shared the story behind the song’s creation during an appearance at the Tribeca Festival.
Bruce Springsteen is looking back on his unexpected Academy Award win for “Streets of Philadelphia,” calling the achievement “a fluke.”
During the Storytellers event at the Tribeca Festival on June 13, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter received the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award and sat down with longtime friend Bono to discuss his influential career.
While reflecting on the song that earned him an Oscar for the 1993 film Philadelphia, Springsteen said the honor came about in an unplanned way.
The musician explained that director Jonathan Demme reached out and asked him to create a rock song for the movie. After learning more about the project and watching an early portion of the film, Springsteen attempted to write a traditional rock track but struggled to find the right direction.
He then experimented with a synthesizer and drum machine, creating the song within just a few days. Although he was unsure whether Demme would connect with the track, he decided to send it to the filmmaker.
Springsteen recalled that Demme initially used the rough demo version in the movie rather than the later finished recording. That version ultimately became part of the film and helped lead to Springsteen winning the Oscar.
The legal drama Philadelphia starred Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The story followed Hanks’ character, Andrew Beckett, a lawyer who seeks help from Washington’s character, Joe Miller, after claiming he was unfairly dismissed from his job because he was gay and living with AIDS.
During their conversation, Bono praised Springsteen’s long history of activism and highlighted his contribution to Philadelphia as an example of his commitment to social issues.
Springsteen credited Demme for bringing him into the project and said the collaboration was a case of positive opportunities coming together at the right time. He added that the success of the song was partly due to the filmmaker’s vision and the connection they created.
