Billy Joel Shares Reassuring Health Update After Brain Condition Diagnosis: ‘I’m Okay’
Billy Joel wants fans to know there’s no need to panic — he’s doing alright.
The 76-year-old music icon opened up to PEOPLE months after revealing that he had been diagnosed with a rare but treatable brain condition. Speaking candidly, Joel addressed the concern surrounding his health, emphasizing that while his diagnosis has been challenging, he’s managing it with optimism and care.
“A lot of people seem worried about me, but I want them to know I’m fine,” he shared. “What I’m dealing with is something not many people have heard of — I didn’t even know much about it myself, even after doing the research. But I’m working through it and doing my best to recover.”
In May, Joel publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that can affect vision, hearing, and especially balance. He explained that balance issues were the first symptom he noticed.
“It felt like I was constantly on a boat,” he said, describing the disorienting experience.
While the diagnosis has been unsettling, especially for someone with a demanding performance schedule, Joel assures fans that the situation is under control. “It was scary, yes,” he admitted. “But I’m okay. I don’t want people to think I’m seriously or terminally ill — that’s just not the case.”
Back in May, Joel announced that he was temporarily stepping away from the stage, cancelling his concert dates to focus on recovery. A statement released at the time said his symptoms had worsened due to the rigors of performing and that he was undergoing targeted physical therapy.
“Billy has been advised to rest and avoid performances while he recovers,” the statement read. “He is grateful for the support he’s received and is looking forward to getting back on stage when the time is right.”
Joel also offered an apology to fans: “I’m truly sorry for disappointing those who were looking forward to the shows, and I appreciate your understanding.”
His wife Alexis expressed her gratitude on Instagram, posting a heartfelt message along with a family photo featuring the couple and their daughters, Della (9) and Remy (7).
“Thank you for the overwhelming love and support,” she wrote. “We’re incredibly thankful for the fast diagnosis and wonderful care. To so many, Billy is a musical legend, but to us, he’s a loving husband and father. We’re hopeful about his recovery and excited for the future.”
Joel’s eldest daughter, Alexa Ray (39), whom he shares with ex-wife Christie Brinkley, also posted a touching tribute on Instagram.
“We love you and we’ve got your back, Pop!” she wrote. “My dad is the strongest, most resilient man I know. He’s deeply committed to his recovery and is pushing through with consistent physical therapy to regain his strength.”
Joel has recently seen renewed interest in his life and work with the release of HBO’s documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, offering a deeper look into his storied career — and now, a testament to his enduring resilience.
